十年程前、ある講演会場で、学校へ行かない子どもたちの孤独について話していたときのこと、質疑応答の時間になって、前の方の席で聞いていてくださった年配の男性が立ち上がり、「今の時代の大変さを言っていたようだったが、僕たちの頃は戦争中で、まず食うことが大変だった。学校は授業らしい授業もなく、僕たちは学徒動員で…。今の子たちとは比べ物にならない大変さだった。そのことについてどう思うのか」と質問された。私はまず、その人が「僕たちは」という言葉で、自分たちのことを述べた、そのことについて、「甘やかな連帯」のようなものの自覚はないか、訊いた。「僕たちの頃」、その方がそう言ったときのどことなく誇らかな調子が、何か郷愁のようなもの、宝物を見せるときのような二ュアンス、私がそのときテーマにしていた子どもたちが、望んで決して得られない何か、そしてその人自身もどこかでそれに気づいている ー自分が持っている宝ー それについて語りたいのだということが察せられたからであった。私はそれが確かに素晴らしい宝であること、うらやましく思うことを正直に言い、そしてその人はそれを認め、私はそれを受けて、けれど、「僕たち」「私たち」で語ることの出来ない孤独について、引き続き何か語った、と思う。
「群れ」にあるということ、それ自体が人を優越させ、安定させ、ときに麻薬のような万能感を生む。そして人は時々、群れを外れている人に向かってそれを確かめ、群れの中にいることの快感を得たいと思う。
甘やかな連帯は、そういう、そこはかとないところで止めておくのが健やかさを保つ鍵である。その快感への渇望が暴走すると、異分子を排除しようと痙攣を繰り返す異様に排他的な民族意識へと簡単に繋がる。
しかし、その一歩手前で止めておけば、これもまた流離感と同じくノスタルジーに繋がる。
